Batman: Arkham City Catwoman DLC Review

Extra Arkham City action is far from purr-fect

Taking the form of a single player scenario rather than the various combat and predator challenges available for purchase in Arkham Asylum, Arkham City’s first piece of downloadable content fits perfectly into Rocksteady’s second instalment of their Batman games. Although there may be a huge contrast when playing as Batman for long periods only to then be thrust into the high-heeled boots of Catwoman, it flows very well within the context of events.

Begin a new game and you assume the role of Catwoman in the first of four parts of her scenario that are interspersed throughout the Bat’s main adventure. When you start your journey through Hugo Strange’s super-prison as the Dark Knight your first task is to rescue Selina Kyle from Two-Face’s clutches and with the DLC plugged in you get an insight into Catwoman’s dealings with Dr Strange and Harvey Dent.

It’s easy to assume that these intrude on …

Borderlands 2 Mr Torgueʼs Campaign of Carnage DLC Review

Chock-full of explosions, pecs and loot, Mr Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage centres around the Badass Crater of Badassitude, whilst an illegal tournament takes place with the purpose of finding Pandora’s biggest badass. As a heroic Vault Hunter, it’s not long before you’re in the running to become the ultimate badass.

The contest, and DLC, is fronted by the loud-mouthed Mr Torguef. Arguably one of the most extravagant personalities Gearbox has ever dreamed up, he’s the perfect guide through the intricate workings of the tournament; namely, killing things. Everything outside of explosions, expletives or executions is seemingly lost on this one-sided character, including spoilers as he lets slip that a new character ‘seems like he’s gonna betray the f**k outta you’. Subtle.

Disappointingly, a lot of Campaign of Carnage is similarly one-dimensional. The main missions see you climb the ladder of the tournament by routinely killing off various underwhelming bosses. There’s a re-skinned Ellie – the top-heavy mechanic – called Motor …

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 – Nuketown Zombies DLC Review

A great new area to blast zombies, but is it worth nearly £40? Erm…

Treyarch’s Zombie mode has evolved from a simple, addictive add-on into a core part of the Call of Duty experience. As the series has progressed the settings have diversified, the gameplay has deepened, and the brains have never stopped spilling. The question of the day, though, is “what happens when you combine one of the most popular modes in the series with one of the most popular maps?” The answer – sheer joy.

Nuketown Zombies takes the player back to the Nevada desert’s familiar mannequin village from the original Black Ops multiplayer, but this time throws in the undead. Nuketown earned its reputation for being a tight, symmetrical multiplayer map designed to create some of the series’ most exciting carnage. This design lends itself to zombie gameplay superbly and the claustrophobic feel hasn’t been felt since the original Nazi zombie house-based map from World at War.…

Halo 4 Majestic map DLC is due to land in February

Another set of multiplayer maps are set to arrive for Halo 4 in February, rumoured to be the 25th. The Majestic map pack includes Landfall, Monolith and Skyline for players to blast around and follows on from the Crimson map pack we’ve already reviewed.

According to Microsoft this is what you can expect <Ctrl-C, Ctrl-VLandfall’s emphasis is on infantry battles against a glittering ocean on a distant world, while Monolith exposes you to the naked vacuum of space – and the firepower of opposing teams, and Skyline’s distinctly industrial feel provides new challenges in somewhat familiar, but occasionally confined spaces. So umm, yeah.

We’ll have a wart(hog)s an’ all review up on the site as soon as possible. Follow us on Twitter and we’ll let you know when it goes live.…

GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony DLC Review Bringing the fun times back to Liberty City

GTA IV sits atop Metacritic with a stonking 98% average rating, but curiously Niko Bellic’s immoral adventure proved surprisingly polarising amongst gamers in 2008. Too serious! Too miserable! Too many fat cousins obsessed with picking up 7-10 splits! Rockstar’s return to the Rotten Apple was too downbeat for some, especially those who have fond memories of blasting their way out of Area 69 in San Andreas with a Grove Street gangbanger wearing a jetpack. The good news is that The Ballad of Gay Tony recaptures this fun with ease.

The DLC add-on follows exasperated Latino bodyguard, Luis Lopez and the titular (and refreshingly stereotype-lite) ‘Gay’ Tony Prince. The homicidal odd couple, are an anti-hero heavy tough guy and a pill-popping, club boss trying to stave off loan sharks and mobsters so the pair can run the “the hottest gay and straight club in Liberty City”.

After GTA IV’s serious plot line, Gay Tony’s balls to the wall madness is refreshing …

Quite frankly, this price is a steal for one of the most fun open-world games you’re likely to play. The island of Panau is rich and diverse. From tropical beaches to snow topped mountains the whole place feels epic and crossing it with the nifty parachute and grappling hook combo is superb. There’s just so much …

Sleeping Dogs: Nightmare in North Point DLC

Undead ass-whooping is over before it’s even begun

If there’s one game that manages to ‘get’ itself in a way that isn’t too serious or overly tongue-in-cheek, it’s without a doubt Sleeping Dogs. And just like how the original game was a tribute to the crime-drama of Asian cinema, the new Nightmare in North Point DLC practically drips with a fan-boy romanticism for the hammy horror movies of 70’s Hong Kong.

Rather than appear as a yellow mission marker, as with previous Sleeping Dogs DLC like the Zodiac Tournament, Nightmare in North Point serves as a separate game world. Think Red Dead Redemption’s Undead Nightmare and you’re about there. Trapped in perpetual night, Wei Shen wanders out of cinema showing a horror flick only to find Hong Kong has been overrun with the kind of evil he’s just watched on the big screen. Mainly a load of freaky spirits and weird, floaty vampires. Not one to confine ass-kicking to the …

Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC Review

A vampire expansion pack to sink your teeth in

“The problem with Skyrim, is that there’s just not enough to do” is a quote that has never been said and never will be. This is due to the almost endless amount of missions spread across a huge map – you’re unlikely to ever run out of things to do in this epic RPG. So a hefty chunk of DLC with even more things to do and places to explore may seem a little daunting, even to seasoned Skyrim folk. Thankfully, Dawnguard is worth the inital panic.

It can be activated like many other Skyrim missions – listening in on guard conversations, a note from a courier or speaking to the local innkeeper.  The main plot here is thus: Vampires are attacking cities in Skyrim under the command of Lord Harkon who’s aim is to fulfil an ancient prophecy told in an Elder Scroll to destroy the sun. This in turn …

Borderlands 2: Captain Scarlett and her Pirateʼs Booty DLC Review

More guns, more loot, and new lands ahoy!

Having set the quality standard so high in Borderlands 2, Gearbox could easily have just added more of the same with DLC and we’d be happy. But with Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty they’ve dared to experiment with some new ideas that really pay off.

The enticing promise of a hoard of lost loot drives the main quest line of the new Pirate’s Bay area, but you’ll have to fight for it. The legendary ‘Leviathan’ boss stands between you and the booty, not to mention the legion of pirates under the command of the ruthless Captain Scarlett.

For all the greatness of Borderlands 2, the leveling-up system leaves much to be desired. Complete every side-quest and your character soon becomes an unflinching killing machine and a majority of main quest areas and enemies are seen off with ease. In Captain Scarlett’s the bad guys level-up with you and offer a challenge …
